Youth in Kenya

About the Boy

February 2023

Meet 14 year old Joel Matasia. As too many children of Africa, his life circumstances meant he almost had to give up on his education. No matter his excellent score in KCPE (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education), Joel comes from a poor family who weren’t able to finance his further education.

Luckily, Joel is one of the kids supported by WAY Empowerment through sports, playing as a midfielder for Maruti FC. Working with the local community, WAY Empowerment NGO was able to find a sponsor, resulting in Joel attending high school and working to achieve his dream of becoming a doctor.

However, our objective is not merely to help individuals, but to enable families to break the cycle of poverty. For this reason, WAY Empowerment NGO focuses on empowering women to forge their way out of poverty with projects that facilitate building of businesses as a long term solution.

WAY Empowerment NGO. Empowering Youth in Kenya

Small-Scale Intervention- Maruti and Acakas Sports Empowerment

08.02.2022 to 08.08.2022

Local partner: Tujipange Community Empowerment Project

Challenge: Kakamega County is a county in western Kenya. Adolescents in Kakamega comprise 23.5% of total population. This segment of the population is at high risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV/AIDS while female adolescents face the additional risk of early pregnancy and unsafe abortion. Pregnancy among adolescents aged 15–19 years continues to be a significant problem in the county.

Solution: The main objective of the project is to use sports as a development tool to overcome social obstacles girls and young women face in Kakamega county. Through sports training, girls are exposed to rules and structure which facilitate reinforcement of personality traits such as integrity, responsibility, fair play, failure management, etc.

Long term impact: We believe that confidence promotes agency. Not only will sport help girls and young women as mentioned above, but developing confidence will ensure they become active members of a community.  In addition, by the agency of training, girls learn to use their voices and skills to become leaders and to take their future into their own hands.

Funding DKK 99.300 by CISU.

On the WAY to school

November 2022

This is Jessica Amanda on her way to school. Until recently, she had to walk 2 hours each way on her daily journey to education.

WAY Empowerment NGO was able to supply her, and other students in need, with bicycles, which dramatically reduced their commute time, giving them more time to study and help their families. We at WAY NGO strongly believe in the importance of education, and are committed to support the youth of Kenya in any way necessary.

She is one of WAY Empowerment NGO bicycle beneficiaries in Kenya. Now she can cycle to school instead of having to walk 2 hours each way.
